Q. What happens if a file is uploaded with the same filename on the system? Will it overwrite or will they both be on the system?
Both will be on the system - it does not overwrite.
If you want to replace one file with another use Versioning (Add new version in the Versions section in the Asset page in Admin).
However if you do upload two files with the same filename - both will be added as an Asset with a unique Asset ID.
We don’t have a way of merging these if they are the same file. If they have the same file name but are actually different Assets, then you can rename the Asset after it is uploaded (via Edit Metadata in the Asset page in Admin).
Filenames should be unique
But why the same file name? This is more problematic at the other end - when users download an Asset with the same file name.
So generally all filenames should be unique.
To help with this we append the unique Asset ID from Brandkit to the beginning of the filename when downloaded.
